Deutsche Bahn, or German Railways, is expanding the range of services offered by its “DB Navigator” app, which now covers not only long-distance and regional transport, but also the so-called “last mile.”
DB Navigator users will see a new tab in the app in the coming days. In the “Umgebung” section, it will now be possible to rent e-scooters and bicycles or view public transport routes.
This makes the Deutsche Bahn app an even more complete universal solution, providing not only transport from station to station, but also the last leg of the journey – the last few meters to your home.
The app shows not only all stops and stations in the user’s vicinity, but also the nearest available bikes and scooters.
If you select a specific station in the “ÖPV” tab, you will receive an overview of the next departure and arrival times. The “Fahrrad” and “Scooter” sections show the available vehicles in the immediate vicinity. Users can also view the route to the selected vehicle on the map.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to rent a bike or scooter using DB Navigator; users must install the app of the respective service provider and book their trip there. A QR code scanner is also available at the top of the app map view to unlock the vehicle.
The number of partner companies is quite limited: if you want to continue riding a bike, the app only offers bikes from Deutsche Bahn’s subsidiary Call-a-Bike, while e-scooters are only available from Dott-Tier. Given that the service providers’ areas of operation are limited, users may not have access to a last-mile solution in the app.
Deutsche Bahn is “in principle” interested in expanding its partnerships with sharing service providers.
